enormity
A friend of mine said she had a dream last night about losing her cell phone. I asked if she woke up frantic, but she said that no, she just continued her dream and got a new phone. But that this is not possible in real life because she just got her current phone two months ago, and now it must last her for the next two years. There was a sense of fatality in the way she said it, THE NEXT TWO YEARS. As though she were facing a vast, bleak desert full of scorpions and rattlesnakes, equipped with a lone six-pack of beer.
Last week another friend of mine mentioned the word "enormity."
"Did you know enormity isn't the noun form of 'enormous'? It's actually 'enormousness'."
Who uses "enormousness??" But apparently "enormity" means seriousness, with an evil or wicked twist. So evil seriousness. Like being stuck in a desert with a six-pack of beer. See how my post went neatly full-circle?
OK it's time for me to work more sleep into my schedule.
